In the winter of 2018, I find myself disembarking from a jet into the arms of a nation of strangers. My traveling companion, I’ve known for only ten hours, and I load into a range rover with men we have never met, and who don’t speak our language. They speed us through the crowded, pot-holed streets of earthquake-recovering Port-au-Prince, through throngs of at-risk pedestrians, zigzag between colorfully painted taptaps overloaded with passengers, and wind the rover up through mountains of volcanic cinder, while dump trucks barrel down on our rear end, towards the central plateau. There, with eyes and heart wide open, for a whirlwind of a week in the city of Hinche, I will teach art, lend a helping hand, learn about the lives of Haitians, and bear witness to the urgent work of Midwives for Haiti.
